The Valley Mire

A view of the western Valley Mire. Calcareous water comes to the surface via a spring located in the centre of the area depicted above, and then flows eastwards across the site.

The constant water flow supports a very lush vegetation, but also means rather treacherous walking conditions. Wellies are an essential item here, and in some areas, waders may be required!

The Wet Heath

To the north and south of the valley mire, we find transition zones between the very wet areas, and the very dry acidic heathland. These zones are known as wet heath, and it is here that we find the majority of the Cross-leaved Heath Erica tetralix, which is the heather that likes to "get its feet wet". Other plants enjoying these areas are Common Cotton Grass, the insectivorous Round-leaved Sundew, and the Marsh Gentian.
